Staunton Harold Reservoir near Melbourne, Leicestershire is in the heart of the growing National Forest and offers a range of attractive walks and leisure activities.
It was originally named Staunton after the local name for limestone, and Harold after the 12th century lord of the manor.
The reservoir was developed from one of six ponds on the neighbouring National Trust Calke Abbey Estate, originally owned by the Harpur Crew family.
The disused tower windmill which dominates the skyline on Staunton Harold Reservoir dates from 1798 - built by the First Lord Melbourne, at a cost of £250.
